Nashville is a songwriter’s town; I’m not saying anything new with that one. There is just something about this town that contributes itself well to music that reaches the heart because it just gets in the blood (to steal a line from Trent Dabbs’ song “Neil Young”). It’s lyrics & music that is rooted deep in our city. It’s the kind that angels speak & certain writers are lucky enough to hear to put down on paper. All in all, it’s just music & lyrics that come from the soul. Lori McKenna & Trent Dabbs are two great songwriters that have an ear to hear & the ability to capture the music that’s in their souls. If you don’t believe me then just check out this week’s Free Music Friday album the Trent Dabbs & Lori McKenna New Album Sampler.

I’ve written about Trent Dabbs before so you know a little bit about his story & his new album Southerner. Lori McKenna is someone that is new to Free Music Friday. If you’re not familiar with her then here is a little bit about her. Lori hails from Stoughton, Massachusetts where she still lives today. She grew up in a home always surrounded by music. Her brothers were great songwriters, & according to Lori, they are responsible for her inspiration to write. She got her big break as a songwriter when some of her songs drew the attention of Faith Hill. Faith loved her songs so much that she used four of them on her hit album “Fireflies”. Lori’s songs have since been used by some of Nashville’s heavy hitters like Alison Krauss & Keith Urban. Her newest album Lorraine is where we hear her heart & soul. Two songs from this album are featured on the sampler, “Buy This Town” & “Sweet Disposition”. “Buy This Town” is one of my favorites. It’s about her hometown of Stoughton & it’s easy to see her love for her hometown coming through in this song.

There is so much more I could write about this sampler, but you really need to hear it for yourself to know how great both these songwriters are! Check out “Can I Cross Your Mind?” to hear a song that Trent & Lori wrote together which is featured on Trent’s new album Southerner. Lori & Trent will both be a part of the Tin Pan South music festival next week. Visit TinPanSouth.com for dates & tickets.
