Nashville’s independent music scene, you’ve seen me write about it a lot on here, that’s what this blog is for after all. Where did this passion come from? A passion has to start somewhere & even though I grew up in Nashville I wasn’t aware of how great our independent music scene was until this week’s Free Music Friday artist, Trent Dabbs.

Trent Dabbs is the creator of the local touring group “Ten out of Tenn”. I can’t tell you for sure when I first heard Trent’s music, but I can tell you that the “Ten out of Tenn” tour exposed me to a wellspring of talent from Madi Diaz, Katie Herzig, Jeremy Lister, Matthew Perryman Jones & more. These musicians tell a story & create music from the heart. It’s the kind of music that instantly connects & keeps you coming back show after show even if you saw them play last week. Trent’s new album “Southerner” is set to do just these things, instantly connect while telling a great story. According to Trent his new album “Southerner” will be a return to his heritage. An album in which the songs are shaped just as much by his home state of Mississippi as his new home in Nashville,Tennessee. The first single “Follow Suit”, & our free track this week, is where we find these influences on full display. Vocally there is a Delta Blues feel in the chorus to this song, while also blending a certain amount of Alt. Country. It’s Johnny Cash meets Muddy Waters in its influence but it’s a song uniquely Trent Dabbs with his strong ability to write a catchy song with an interesting story. “Follow Suit” speaks of not following what other’s are doing but sticking to your convictions even if it means creating a few enemies along the way. If this first single is an example of what we can expect from “Southerner” then we are definitely in store for an amazing album come February 22nd.
