Nashville is a town brimming over with artistic talent & I’m not just talking about musical talent. Nashville is rich with talented photographers, artist & videographers. This week’s Free Music Friday artist, John Moessner, is not only a talented musician but he’s also a talented director. John has done some of the best music videos & promotional videos I’ve seen in Nashville but his music is what stands out the most.

John Moessner spent most of his life growing up in Nashville. Very early on he was surrounded by talented musicians & songwriters. Classical, folk, & gospel music filled his house influencing & shaping his life only the way that music can. John was trained in classical & jazz piano very early on so songwriting & playing various instruments became second nature to him. This musical talent & great songwriting ability is evident on his first full length album “Welcome to the Johngle”. The first track on “Welcome to the Johngle” is, unsurprisingly enough, “Welcome to the Johngle”, an instrumental song that mirrors one of John’s musical influences the Beatles, while also adding some of his own personal touches. This is the kind of instrumental that could have been found on “Sgt. Peppers” if only it had been done a few decades later. “First Attempt” is where we are introduced to John’s “James Taylor esque” vocals & great songwriting ability. It’s a song that speaks of having so much talent but not really doing the work to get it out there. Expecting it all just to fall out of the sky & fall right into your lap hoping that maybe in your death that people will actually notice your talent. The song “Is the Universe Friendly?” is an Elliott Smith esque song not only lyrically but vocally. It speaks of past hurt & trying to find a place in this world where people won’t turn against you. John speaks of how it really doesn’t matter, that all we can be is true to ourselves & forget the hurt that others have caused us in the past. The track that you can tell John had the most fun writing is “How It Began”, our Free Music Friday track. “How It Began” is a song about how John first met his wife. With a guest appearance from his son, to it’s “Mr. Big Stuff” guitar rift, it’s a song that you can’t help but love & it’s one that will get stuck in your head for days. To check out the rest of the songs from “Welcome to the Johngle” head over to Noisetrade.com. There you will find other great songs like “If”, “Let’s Go Fly a Kite”, & “I’ll Be Here Waiting” all for free in exchange for your e-mail address. Also if you would like to check out John’s talent at making great promotional videos & music videos visit Vimeo.com/JohnMoessner. Here is one of my favorite videos of John’s featuring two of my favorite artists in Nashville, Joy Williams & Trent Dabbs, singing their song “Charmed Life”.
