Is Hulu Plus a Minus?

Will you use Hulu Plus for $9.99 a month?  New bells and whistles like HD and entire catalogs of shows grab many peoples’ attention.  And you don’t have to be strapped down to your computer either, as all the popular mobile devices (except Android) will have the ability to use Hulu Plus via 3G or Wifi.  It will also be available on the gaming platforms like XBox 360, Playstation 3 and the Wii.

Early complaints about the service:

  1. Ads.  Unmutable ads.
  2. iPhone 4G users have a bandwidth limit, this will eat it up.
  3. Less than a 2 star rating in the iTunes App Store.
  4. Customers don’t want to leave Netflix (Most see it as an either-or).

It seems clear that Hulu Plus won’t be as much competition for Netflix as it will for DVD sales.  Why would people buy full season DVDs when they can get it all online for less than ten bucks?  Still, Netflix and Hulu Plus combined will be less expensive than half of what most cable bills cost, and arguably provide more entertainment.

Netflix can actually be streamed over the iPhone 4G, so Hulu Plus really doesn't have a leg up on the competition there yet. It'll be interesting to see how the film industry reacts over time to the streaming options. Wonder if we'll start seeing low-budget films take over the market?
